Short description of the project.
The Lusahunga – Rusumo road section (92Km) is located in Kagera Region. The road forms part of the T3 (Central Corridor Highway) which connects the Dar es Salaam port with the land locked neighboring countries of Rwanda and Burundi. The Road starts at Lusahunga in Biharamulo District and ends at Rusumo in Ngara District – Kagera Region which is the border town with Rwanda. The road is among the priority links for improvement on the central corridor networks because it connects Tanzania with neighboring countries of Burundi and Rwanda. This facilitates interstate trade with the neighboring countries of Burundi and Rwanda.
The Lusahunga – Rusumo road section (92Km) was upgraded to bitumen standard in 1985 with a double bituminous surface dressing (DBSD) on the 6.5-meter wide carriageway with 1.5 meters wide double bituminous surface dressing (DBSD) shoulders on each side for a design life of 15 years. Currently the road has deteriorated drastically due to long age. Typical defects include severe potholes, rutting deformation, corrugations, extensive cracking (alligator cracks) and depressions. Generally, the road condition is from bad to fair.
